Is it possible to convert an iPhoto library to Photos compatible?

My hard drive crashed, but fortunately I had been using Time Machine so I retained a copy of my iPhotos library. But by the time I bought a new iMac (I got by using my iPad Pro for a while) iPhotos had changed to Photos and now my iPhotos library can't be opened. Is there a way to convert it to Photos? It's a little more than 40 GB of photos so I'd hate to lose it.

Yes you can use it in Photos.

Press and hold the option/ alt key whilst opening Photos.

You will see a Choose Library window, there will be a list of

all the available iPhoto or photos libraries you can use.

Select the iPhoto library and click on Choose Library,

Photos will now import your iPhoto library.
