Even if Apple could pair up the serial number with the original owner, they will never give you that information. It would be a violation of federal privacy laws.

I don't know why you think the police wouldn't return it. If the phone matches the description of a lost item claim, they'll contact the owner that they have it.

Since nobody here (neither we, just users like you, nor Apple) can help you to find the original owner, and since that unit doesn't belong to you, I suggest that you take it to the police.

That said, you're free to do whatever you want.

If the Police can't help, I suggest that you turn in the phone to an Apple Store for recycling.
