MAC (High Sierra) - iTunes and "iCloud Music Library" frustration!

OK - I have an old Mac - only able to run High Sierra and iTunes. I am perfectly happy with this, so please don't suggest I upgrade to the latest Mac.


Problem: For years I set up playlists in iTunes and downloaded the playlists to my iphone. If I wanted to change what I had on my phone, I merely updated the playlist on the Mac and re-synced.


I have now discovered, when I tried to update my playlists, that my phone has "ICloud Music Library " switched on and I can't sync my playlists any more.


Can someone tell me how I can return to downloading my playlists form my Mac to my phone? I'm not interested in any 'advantages' or latest technology in using iCloud Music Library, I just want to be able to download playlists direct to my phone, so please can you either tell me how to do it or tell me its impossible.

OK, I think I have resolved this myself.


I noticed that my alexa still had a link to the apple music account so clear that. Then I signed out of iTunes on my Mac and on my iPhone for 24 hours.


When I tried to sync again, everything was fine.


Problem solved. I hope this helps someone with similar issues.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're not able to sync your music to your iPhone right now and you'd like to continue doing that when adding or changing your music selections. We'd like to help.


When updating your iPhone, Sync Library is on by default. If you're not a member of Apple Music or iTunes Match, you can turn that off in Settings. Go to Settings > Music > Sync Library and turn it off.


Then you should be able to Use iTunes to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer as expected.

Having researched this a little more, I think my problem stems form the fact that I started a trial subscription to Apple Music which subsequently expired. I still have the subscription showing on my phone, though expired.


I use an iPhone 8 Plus and I do not have the setting you specify on my phone (see attached screenshot).


Basically, there appears to be no way I can switch off iCloud Music Library, which is patently ridiculous as I do not subscribe to Apple Music or iTunes Match. It seems to have created an issue in that I cannot switch off the sync because I don't have the Apple Subscription which would allow the phone to show the setting, and because I have an expired subscription registered on my iPhone my iPhone thinks it is still connected to the iCloud Music Library.


What I need is a definitive answer to removing iCloud Music Library which does not rely on the existence of a valid Apple Music subscription.
