Connecting Apple TV via new iPhone SE 20 to TV - not working

I've bought a generic HDMI adapter, purportedly compatible with iPhone X/8/7/6/plus, in order to play Apple TV on my television but, having connected the adapter per instructions, when I press play (on the phone) it says on both screens:

Cannot Play Film The connected display is not authorised to play protected films

Don't know what, where, how to authorise the "display" - presume this means the television?

Any guidance or direction to relevant information much appreciated.

In order to play protected content both the cable and display needs to support the protocol (HDCP) to do so. You can check to ensure your TV supports HDCP, but it's likely that the 'generic' adapter is the cause. It is not usually recommended to use adapters that have not been MFI certified.
