If you can send email, then your outgoing (SMTP) server settings, username and password are correct. However, your incoming (IMAP or POP3) settings, most likely your username or password, are not correctly configured for your email account.


Resolution is often simplest by deleting the account from your iPad - then re-adding using the Add Account wizard. Alternatively, if you know the correct settings, you can manually review and change as needed from Settings.
