Dip to black transition

I have 2 clips that are touching each other and would like to add a transition that fades to black and then fades up from black to see the next clip (rather than dissolve into the next shot). My workaround has been to use the Position tool to move the right clip over a hair, add a cross dissolve to the end of the previous clip and the begging of the clip I just moved, then move them back touching each other. Is there an effect or plugin that can do this without all the extra steps?

Use the Fade to Color transition.

Black is already the default, so all you have to do is add the transition.

You can even make it the default transition: control-click and choose Make Default Transition.

Then you will only need to press Command-T to add it.
