The Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro has its magnetic connector pins/pads in a completely different location than older iPad Pro models.
The iPad Pro Magic keyboard is design for the newest 2018/2020 design iPad Pro models.
Plus, the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pros acts as a case for the newer design 2018.2020 models.
So, this Magic keyboard/case will NOT fit the older model iPad Pros.
Also, their magnetic connection pins/pads are on the back panel of the newer 2018/2020 iPad Pro models.
On older iPad Pro models, the magnetic connection pins/pads are on the sides of the iPad.
Location of these pins are in a totally different location.
That Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro is NOT compatible with any 2015-2017 iPad Pro models.

Sorry.
This page. I believe I’ve seen others as well. I suspect there are some features of the Magic Keyboard 12.9, that don’t work with the iPad Pro 12.9. I’d like to know what they are. They may not be an issue to me.
Indeed, and the store page for the magic keyboard says it's only compatible with 3rd or 4th iPad Pro 12.9 Gen.

Because it's not compatible?
Perhaps, but other Apple pages claim that the keyboard is compatible with all iPads.
