ipad 3 ios 9. activation lock help

My old iPad 3 which is on iOS 9 is signed in on my very old Apple ID which I stopped using years ago and I didn’t have a passcode so I enabled in settings 10 wrong passcode attempts and then reset the iPad but when it reset it had an activation lock and now I have been locked out and I can’t remember the passcode for my very Old Apple ID, any help?

If your device is Activation Locked, this help page will provide most of the information that you’ll need:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201365

If you have forgotten your AppleID or associated password, these can be recovered here:

https://iforgot.apple.com

To recover your credentials, you’ll need access to one of the following:

  • Your primary email address mailbox that corresponds with your AppleID
  • Any of the secondary/recovery email addresses that should be configured for your AppleID account
  • Any of the trusted telephone numbers (fixed line or Cellular/Mobile) that are associated with your AppleID

Unless you AppleID account has not been fully/correctly configured, or has been seriously neglected, recovery of the AppleID and password should not be difficult.

When you recover access to your credentials, you would be well advised to log-in to your AppleID account from a web browser - and verify/update any email addresses and trusted telephone numbers:

The age and origin of the AppleID doesn’t change the available recovery process. The Activation Lock is always associated with the AppleID that was last used to activate the device.

If you wish to recover use of the Activation Locked device, you have no alternative other than to concentrate your effort on recovery of the “old” AppleID credentials.

If the AppleID account was setup correctly, with multiple Trusted phone numbers and multiple secondary email addresses (both of which are recommended and advised), then access to at least one of these is needed to receive account reset instructions. If you have access to none, then it’s game over - other than learning from the experience and making sure that your “current” AppleID account is properly configured and maintained.

An AppleID account should be with you for life; all your devices should be associated with the account. If you ever need to to change you primary email address (used for sign-in to your AppleID), the email address should simply be updated. For future reference:
