ALL local mail files in "on my Mac" folder are gone!

Woke up this morning to ALL local mail files in "on my Mac" folder missing. Using Mojave 10.14.6.

All the folders under it (about 25 folders with 1000's of messages) are gone. When I click "show" it prompts to create a mailbox. Yesterday everything was working perfectly; I'm not aware of any auto updates last night to my Mac, although I believe my iOS updated last night, which I don't think has any impact on my Mac.... NOT knowledgeable about these things. Help!

Yikes...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
