recovery mode not seeing bluetooth mouse or keyboard

I just got a new 27" iMac and I'm trying to prepare my late-2015 iMac running Catalina to send to Apple for trade-in value. I follow the instructions recieved to to erase the hard drive by first going ionto recovery mode - pressing the Cmd+R keys on start up. When I do this the machine will not go into recovery mode - it just keeps looking for a BT keyboard and mouse. I have both next to the computer charged. They worked fine prior to trying to go into recovery mode.

You can try pulling the batteries or turning them off then on, but likely you'll need a wired USB set to complete.
