from outlook to mail

I have had my MacBook Pro for nearly three years and have always used Outlook for my mail etc. I was informed by a good friend that I would find it better to use Mail. (I have the iApple watch and the iPhone 7S) What I want to know is this right, and, how can I transfer all my mail and folders from Outlook to Mail. I have a number of folders with mail collected over the years that I want to keep.

Thanks for reaching out through Apple Support Communities for help with configuring your Mail app with the same settings and folders as Outlook. We're happy to help!


Are you aware of whether your email accounts configured for use with Outlook use the IMAP standard? If so, any new folders and changes made in Outlook are synced with the email server, which means that if you were to configure an IMAP email account in Mail app, all of the folders and existing messages would sync and be made available there as well.


The following guide explains in detail how to add and configure an email account in Mail:


Add or remove email accounts in Mail on Mac


If your email account uses the POP standard, email messages were downloaded from the server to Outlook. In this case, simply configuring the mail account in your Mail app won't automatically sync any past messages downloaded into Outlook and removed from the mail server.


In that case, we want to mention that it's possible to import mailboxes into Mail. This guide explains how:


Import or export mailboxes in Mail on Mac


For instructions on exporting your desired mailboxes from Outlook, reach out to Microsoft Support here.

Are you currently able to send and receive new emails in the Mail app?


Since you're seeing messages from before 2016, let's see if we can take a step to verify if messages after 2016 are still available on your email server. Many email service providers have a website you can sign into to view your email online through your web browser. If you're aware of such a website, let us know if you see newer email messages in the inbox when you sign into the website directly.


If you're not sure if your email service provider offers web access, we recommend contacting them directly to inquire. If it can be determined that those newer email messages after 2016 are available through the website, it means they're present on the server, and it would indicate an issue with the configuration of the Mail app.


If they're not visible on the website, it's not expected that they would download to your Mail app. In that case, we can recommend researching the steps to export mailboxes from Outlook to Mail. Contact Microsoft Support directly for instructions using Outlook to export, then you may refer to the guide we shared previously for the steps to import.


Regarding the issue with white text on a black background in Mail, it sounds like you've got Dark Mode enabled on your Mac. This feature can be set to turn on automatically at certain times, or disabled altogether. Here's a guide with detailed information to help configure Dark Mode in a way that works best for you:

I am not the worlds greatest IT person so I have probably made a mistake somewhere, not unusual for me. I don't know if my mail is imap or pop whatever they are, so you will have to treat me like a real ignoramus. I have tried to the best of my ability to do what you said, and seem to have got halfway there, but none of the mail that is on my apple mail is after 2016!!!! Also the background is black and the writing is white and I am having difficulty reading it.
