Disk Utility shows only Apple disk image Media

I have a flashing question mark problem with my MacBook Pro as well documented here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204323

On Step 3 in the instructions above, I run into a problem. While in macOS recovery's Disk Utility I only see Disk Images, not Internal Drives:

I have several questions:

  1. Based on the instructions for Disk Utility's Disk Repair (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210898) am I supposed to see Internal Drives as well?
  2. Am I supposed to run Disk Repair on the Disk Images?
  3. Could I just reinstall macOS?

You have no mounted drive which usually means it has died and needs replacing.
