Entire "Song" Menu Greyed out on Music for Mac - Cannot Add to Library

When I am in the Music App on my Mac I am unable to access anything under the "song" menu - which means that i am unable to select "Add to Library" etc.

Drag and drop of songs also seems to be affected by this so I can add songs that are in  Music but none that are on my Mac physically.

This happens no matter where I am located within the app.

I have tried :

  • force quitting the app
  • restarting my Mac
  • signing out and back in to  Music
  • de-authorizing and re-authorizing the computer

None of these seem to fix the problem. This appears to be a genuine bug and is extremely inconvenient.

is there a solution that I am missing? This problem just started happening about 2 weeks ago.

Please help!

Okay, so i caved and reinstalled my OS as instructed because it was getting really frustrating.

I'm sorry to report that i still cannot import any music to my library.

The options are no longer greyed out (this started happening before i did the OS Re-install) but when i try to either drag & drop or select "import" and choose a song to add nothing happens. No hour glass, no error message, it just never adds.

This is really frustrating.

Hey RatedRSE,

We understand that the options under the Song drop-down in the menu bar are greyed out, no matter where you are in the Music app.

Check out this information to add music to Music app from the following article here: Import music from a computer to Music on Mac

"Tip: You can also drag a file or folder from the Finder to the Music window to import it."

The article also has this helpful information as well:

"When you import an item by dragging it to the Music window or choosing File > Add To Library or File > Import, a reference (or “pointer”) to the item—not the item itself—is placed in the Music folder. You might not be able to play the song if you move it."

If Sync Library is enabled, the option to import songs/albums in to Music might be grayed out. You can read more about Sync Library here: Turn on Sync Library with Apple Music

Let us know if that helps. In the meantime, take care!

RatedRSE,

Thanks for letting us know. Do you have Sync Library enabled? If yes, does temporarily turning that off in Music > Preferences > General tab show some of the options no longer being grayed out?

If the issue continues with Sync Library disabled or if you don't use that, let us know if this happens in a new user on your Mac, as that can help isolate further:

RatedRSE,

Thanks for letting us know what happened after trying that step.

Check out the following article for the issue with the songs and albums not showing after turning on Sync Library: If songs are missing from your music library after you turn on Sync Library

On your Mac, please restart it into safe mode to help isolate this further to see if the Song drop-down menu issue continues: How to use safe mode on your Mac

Cheers.

RatedRSE,

Alright, we appreciate the new information. Earlier we mentioned trying a new user to see if the same issue happens in that user. Have you had the time to try that as well? If it happens in another user, then you can try reinstalling macOS after backing up your data:

How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery

If you continue to encounter this issue in only your user or after reinstalling, you can contact Apple Support for further assistance here: Contact Apple Support

I do not have another user that can try it, so I won’t be able to do that step.

Come on now... isn’t there anything we can do without having to reinstall my OS? The issue is a bug in me music app. Everything else works fine. If that’s my only option I’ll probably just live with it and hope it gets fixed in a future MacOS release.
