How do you update to a newer version when the app store says there are no updates available?

I want to download an app that requires version 10.15; however I have version 10.13.6 and the app stores says "no updates available". How do I update my mac?

If your MacBook Air is a 2012 or later model (from Apple menu > About This Mac) see information in How to upgrade to macOS Catalina - Apple Support
