AirPods connect automatically to iPad but not iPhone

My AirPods aren’t connecting automatically to my iPhone (iOS 12.4.8), but they do connect to my iPad automatically.

How can I get them to connect to my phone the minute I put them in my ears, like they do with my iPad?

I have my iPad and iPhone side by side and would like to be able to switch seamlessly with AirPods between the two. Is that possible?

thanks, C

They will connect immediately to the last device they were used with. If you were using them on your iPhone last, then you will have to go to the Bluetooth settings on your iPad and click on the AirPods to connect them. From then on they should automatically connect to your iPad. Next time you want to use them on your iPhone you have to repeat this procedure, unless the iPad is out of Bluetooth reach. Then the AirPods should connect to the next available device they have been paired with.

That is so helpful, thank you.

I suppose it would be a bit confusing if they could hook up to both iPad and IPhone at the same time, although that would be brilliant.

I work on my iPad with sound, but then was hoping to be able to seamlessly pick up my phone when I received a call rather than having to fumble through the Settings, Bluetooth, Connect AirPods route.
