Booting to black screen

My MacBook Pro started booting to black screen with no cursor and no prompt for password. If I start it with Command+R pressed and go to Disk Utility, I see that Macintosh HD drive is unmounted. I mount it manually, it prompts me for the password, and then successfully runs the diagnostic. I can also view all folders I have on the disk. I reboot the MacBook again, go to Disk Utility only to see that the disk is unmounted. The only time I am prompted for the password is when I mount the disk, but not during the startup.

It looks like it all started due to encryption, but I am not sure. What can be done to fix it?

Disk Utility found no errors.

If I attempt to reinstall OS, I get a black screen, and nothing is happening because I am guessing by the time the OS starts the installation, my HD is unmounted again.

The only useful advise in this article is to contact Apple Support, which I thought I am doing here.

The solution was totally unexpected. My MacBook was booting and prompting me to login, but it was NOT turning on the back light at the time it prompted me for the password. Use a flashlight on the back of the screen to see when to login, and then everything works.
