Can't pair watch for first time because it won't update

I was just given an Apple Watch Series 1 running WatchOS6. I am trying to pair it for the first time to an iPhone 6S that I just updated to iOS14.0.1. When I open the Watch app and start the pairing process it says that an update is available and the options are to install update or skip update and exit setup. Either way, I end up having to try to update. When I hit Update Now it says Activating Apple Watch for a few seconds, then changes to Checking for Update, then a pop-up appears saying Unable to Check for Update - Checking for a software update failed because you are not connected to the internet. The options are to Start Over or Try Again. Either way, I end up back here, and again and again.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! It seems you're unable to pair your Apple Watch with your iPhone.

Test after forgetting the Wi-Fi network from your iPhone and reconnecting. If the issue persists, reset the network settings on your iPhone and then test:

How to forget a Wi-Fi network on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac - Apple Support
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network - Apple Support

"Reset your Network Settings. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you’ve used before."

Additionally, test while connected to a different network, and reach out to Apple Support if the issue persists: Get Support

Thanks for your reply.

I tried forgetting the network, then resetting the network settings, then tried another network, all with no success, the same thing is happening, my phone screen says unable to check for update because I am not connected to the internet.

What is not connected, the watch or the phone? Obviously the phone is connected.

Is it because I do not have a SIM card in the phone?

Use 2.4Ghz wifi not 5Ghz.

Hi,

Thanks for trying to help. Unfortunately this didn't work either, still the same message. Is it because I updated the iPhone 6S to iOS14? Should I try and revert back to iOS13?
