MacBook Air updating from 10.9 to Catalina

I am trying to help a friend update their 2013 MacBook Air from 10.9 all the way to Catalina. When trying to update I get to the “select disk” screen and the options are “Back” or “Install” - I click on “Install” - I see the click state on the button then nothing happens - no progress or any indication that this is working. The computer has 90 GB available. I have created a time machine backup. When I look at the Catalina update in Applications it is a 19 GB file. I have tried to view installation logs but the pop up- shows the view logs header and the window doesn’t show anything but a weird copy or the desktop.

Any help would be amazing. The Hank you in advance!!!!

I think you will have to upgrade to El Capitan first.
