Connections to host p63-imap.mail.me.com on the default ports failed - red dot in Mail accounts

After working for years, my iCloud E-mail account all of a sudden can no longer connect in Apple Mail (red dot in Accounts list in preferences). The connection doctor log reveals that the Apple Mail client tries to connect to the iCloud IMAP server on port 0 (should be 993). Manually configuring an IMAP client for iCloud in Apple Mail works. It looks like the automatically generated server configuration for iCloud is screwed up. Where is information on IMAP servers including the port number stored? One could probably fix the port number there in some configuration file. I could not find it in the library (checked Prefs, Mail and Containers).

See some articles https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT202304

Don't fill up any settings in server settings , keep it as empty it depends which mail services you are using and what is your internet service provider following the port settings .

For gmail accounts configured with iCloud , the settings are by default ( kept as empty ) .

Previous versions back to Mac OS catalina 10.15.7 like Mac OS El Capitan , in which port setings has to be added manually , app specific passwords were used long back https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204397

In the latest version no port settings or any other settings in mail preferences are added , even any user try to add them the mail application will not accept .

Thanks for your reply and all your efforts. However, I saw these postings before and your explanations do not apply to my problem and do not solve it. Did you really read my question? In the "connection doctor" log it looks like the IMAP port number in my iCloud mail account got screwed up, after working for many years. It is now zero (0), but should probably be 993. For iCloud accounts, the user cannot choose the IMAP port anymore in MacOS Mojave, all configurations are automatic. Nice if it works, bad if it causes problems. Removing and re-adding the iCloud account did not help. However, I can configure my iCloud E-mail account as a regular IMAP account (with port 993 and with an app specific password) and this works. Do you now in which file the port number of the iCloud mail server is stored? All plist files I checked did not show it.
