Audio on one side only iMovie, mono recording

Working in iMovie with my older VHS material I have the situation to have sound only on the left speaker, because the original camcorder was mono.


I would expect that iMovie has a way during export to divide that mono over two speakers. I can not discover that option. Now instead I import the audio track in garageband, export in double mono and re-import the audio track.... Well that is not the way to go Apple.


Do I miss something in iMovie, please let me know.


iMac late 2011, High Sierra....

iMovie doesn't have much in the way of audio export options. In fact, none, other than formats. After exporting, you would need to convert your one side mono video clip to double sided mono by re-rendering with a program like the free download, Handbrake. Or GarageBand, since you have found that that works.


Consider that iMovie is a free consumer video editor. You probably can find the audio editing capability that you want in video editors that can be purchased. You might check out Apple's Final Cut Pro X to see if it has that capability. However, it costs around $299.00.

I was expecting this, sad though. I used Magix once for around $65,- on the pc.

The gap between iMovie for free and FCP is a bit steep for the familystuff I edit on video.


iMovie is a fine tool to assemble a video. However free? The price of an iMac is not the hardware only. All those Apple apps comes for sure with a price purchasing a Mac.
