When I swipe from the Home Screen to the search bar everything looks great and I can interact with most objects fine - but when I give the search control focus the screen goes blurry. See attached.

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If we understand correctly, you are having an issue with using the search feature on your iPhone. If you haven't already, please restart your device as iOS clears cached data and does other system optimizations when you turn your device off and on.
Also, make sure your iPhone is up to date, as the updates contain stability fixes that can resolve issues like yours, as well as important security updates to keep your iPhone safe.

I had the same problem and solved the blurring of the search bar by doing a hard reset.
