Hi,

I can't explain why but following these steps immediately solved my issues and the printer started to print right after I followed this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments/he1ok0/macbook_catalina_waiting_for_printer_to_become/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Here is the summary for you:

Remove printer drivers

If the issue continues on your Mac after resetting the printing system, take these final steps to remove any currently installed printer drivers. These steps don't apply to AirPrint printers.

  1. From the menu bar in the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder. Type /Library/Printers/
  2.  and click Go.
  3. The Printers folder opens. Choose Edit > Select All, which selects all items in the Printers folder.
  4. Choose File > New Folder with Selection, which puts all of the selected items into a new folder named New Folder With Items. To save storage space, you can delete this folder.

It is an HP issue.

Update your software, if necessary remove the printer and add it back it.

>Software update:

HP Printer Software 5.1 should now be becoming available through Software Update to fix this issue.

(2220 UTC 23 October 2020)

If you have continued issue:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essentials-S-5_14_8_4.pkg

download link above at the ftp address. Installed that, then remove printer and reinstall

If it is listed as AirPrint printer, delete the existing printer in

> System Preferences> Printers & Scanners, and add it again, select AirPrint.
