Just purchased the new IPAD Air with the optional magic keyboard. Can I use the keyboard in a wireless configuration, e.g. not physically attached to the IPAD?

No, not possible.
The Apple Magic keyboard electrically connects with the iPad using the Smart Connector contacts on the back of the iPad.
