how to move a large photos library from my imac to a external hard drive

First make sure the drive is formatted as shown in this screenshot:

Then drag the library package from the Pictures folder in your Home folder to the external HD.

If you plan on deleting the library on your iMac open the one on the EHD to make sure it's working properly before deleting.
