My tech savy 7-year old showed her 5-year old sister how to put a passcode on her iPod without me knowing it. My 5-year old has since forgotten what her passcode is and is locked out of her iPod. I have followed the steps at Apple Support many times but never can get the iPod to show the recovery mode screen. Can anyone help?

I have already been there and tried that. As I said I have tried it multiple times but can't ever get the iPod recovery mode screen to come up.
Any other suggestions?
