Upgrading from macOS Catalina 10.15.7 to Big Sur

Upgrading from macOS Catalina 10.15.7 to Big Sur. When I try to upgrade all I get is error occurred and no reason other than that, and I do have more than enough HD space to accommodate the upgrade to a tune of 775 GB free space. Don't know what to do at this point. My iMac is on the compatible list.

the no download issue was solved for me by another user. i kept getting the error message, even after the server came back on line. about 1-1/2 hours after that, i received a post that solved it for me. see this thread for the solution. (marked solved) only delete the plist file

I had a couple problems, one was I did the steps in the thread and also had a hung backup in the trash bin that wouldn’t empty so I also deleted the backup plist thread in the properties file because it was tied to an old drive in which I copied the files to a new drive and formatted the drive and the trash emptied and all was ok and Big Sur started downloading.
