Can't receive email on iphoneX

Abruptly, as of yesterday in the middle of the day, I can no longer receive email on my iphone. The message I receive is "Cannot get mail, no password provided." At settings, I reenter the password, and as if it doesn't recognize I have done that, the message asks again for a password. I still receive email on my ipad (same email and password) so it seems to be a problem with the iphone. I updated to ios 14.2 this morning, but it did not help.

Remove your email account and set it up again

On your computer, sign in to your email provider's website. Make sure that all of your email is there or make sure that your email is saved somewhere other than your iOS device. On your iOS device, go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts.
