Why the Wait?:

It may take a while to get through to Apple Support. And that makes sense because many are at home at the moment working out of the house or taking classes at home (due to the Coronavirus Pandemic), thus giving them more time to contact Apple Support. So, just stay on the line, and you will get through :)

The last refresh of the MBP 16" was introduced November 2019.

I would look to next November 2021 for anything new here.

Apple is transitioning their entire line, so that answers the “if”. The timeframe is anyone’s guess. Apple says it will take 2 years, so the time is anywhere between now and November, 2022.

When I put on my computer architect hat and look at the M1, it looks like all they had to do was take the latest iPhone chip and hang a second display-generator on it, and write a few drivers for additional peripherals and tweak their ThunderBolt drivers.

Then write a bunch more software to do throttling to manage the heat in the fanless model.

That one was the easy one.

The Mac Mini with the M1 supports, "...one external display up to 6K and a second with HDMI 2.0 up to 4K." So it will drive a pair of 4K displays like the last-gen Intel 13" MBP and MBA.

The second one in the Mini takes the place of the Built-in in the M1 13-in MacBook Pro.

I think if that's all you get, Users would rightfully say, "that's no better than the M1 13-in MacBook Pro" or no better than the 2011 MacBook Pro models that support only one external display.

I was mistaken when referring to "This Thread" above.

The thread I was referring to is about the 16-in MacBook Pro. It is currently over 250 pages long, and consists of unhappy users of the MacBook Pro 16-in where the temps run high, the fans kick in, and the machine makes "too much noise" when connected to one or more 4K external displays (and other varying combinations of multiple high-performance displays).

Sorry, Apple has made no announcement other than the models that were released this week. As other Apple product users, we would have no way of knowing.

Given the M1 specs, I’d certainly hope the 16” refresh uses the M1x, M2, or whatever the next step up in the new architecture will be called.

Anyone with insider information about this subject is under Non-disclosure agreement, and simply can't say.
