Big Sur Spotlight not showing local content

Since upgrading to Big Sur, Spotlight is only showing Internet search hits. No local content is shown at all (documents, apps etc.).

I have checked all settings in the Spotlight System preferences and unchecked and rechecked all items. Also, I added the HD not to be indexed and removed it again to trigger index rebuild. It did not help.

Any suggestions to fix it?

Thanks, we tried all of that and more (basically all you can find with search). Nothing helped. After reaching out to Apple Support and escalation to next level at support, we found a solution that seems a bit lengthy at the beginning but was no big deal after all:

  1. Installing a fresh and clean Big Sur on a new partition (luckily, I have a large SSD so there was enough space)
  2. Test the new partition of everything works.
  3. Start migration assistant and move your user from the old installation to the new one.
  4. Test if everything works again (it does for me)
  5. Delete old (partition) and rename new installation to old name.

Thats it. Besides TimeMachine started more or less over again all worked as planned and the migration process itself just took a couple of minutes. Apple has no clue, what has happened and they are investigating. However, for me it is solved.

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities, aero1247e!

it sounds like you're having an issue with Spotlight not working properly since updating to Big Sur. If you've followed the steps in the article for how to Rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac and still have an issue, we would recommend reaching out to Apple directly by checking out this link to Get Support and they will be more than happy to proceed with additional steps.

Have a terrific day!

It is getting worse. After my "fix" and some trouble-free days the problem has returned. SpotLight not working anymore. Just showing internet hits, nothing local, no docs, apps, whatsoever. I am getting really tired of Apple. After decades of happiness it is hard to link the name Apple with the term reliability today. So, JaDub, you are right: a waste of time... Update to 11.1 did not change anything. Still not working.

Agree. This is off-topic, but this year I had to replace the screen of my 2 year old MacBook pro TWICE, costing me not only the repair but each time a couple of days of renting a replacement plus the extra hours to transfer all data back and forth. Then I had to replace my AirPod Pro because apparently you get voice quality so ****** for 270 EUR that no one can understand you. Now my MacBook tells me that my battery needs service and I spend time to try to fix spotlight. Seriously, WHAT THE F*CK Apple??
