Files "disappear" from a mounted external hard drive

I have a MyBook 3TB external drive (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format) that recently has been behaving oddly. The drive is mounted to my iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), running Catalina 10.15.7).

Occasionally when I open the drive with Finder the folders and files are not visible. And Get Info shows that files are indeed there and taking up space. Disk Utility First Aid report no errors on drive. They are not marked as hidden files. The only way I can get these files to "come back" is to unmount/mount the drive or reboot the iMac.

Online posts on this topic are old, and many suggest a failing hard drive. So I purchased a new MyBook 4TB (formatted APFS) and the same problem occurred within an hour of putting files on the new drive.

Both drives are powered and connected directly into my iMac.

So is my problem the iMac? ? Thanks

Boot into Safe Mode by booting with the Shift key held down and check there to see if the problem persists.  Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Hello there Kiwi in PA,

We'd like to see how we can help with your external hard drive and your iMac.

First, we'd like to ask a few questions to gain a better understanding of your issue. Do you use any other drives? If so, do they also experience the same issue? Have you attempted to try different USB ports on your Mac? Do other USB devices experience issues when connected to your iMac?

With that info, we can develop a clear path to getting this resolved.

Cheers.

Thanks. I now have 2 drives (both WD My Books, 3TB-older and 4TB -brand new) directly attached to the USB ports on back of iMac. The problem of "losing files" happens on both. (It also happened when attached via a powered 3.0 USB hub.)

I have also a 2TB drive sitting in a SATA dock attached to the hub - interestingly it does not seem have the same problem, it is constantly getting usage as a Time Machine backup drive so it never sits idle for long.

The only other USB devices I use is Keyboard and mice dongle.

Thanks

Thanks for following up with us,

We'd like to see how we can isolate this issue down to help us clear a path to resolving this issue.

We'd like to see if the issue is persistent in a new user account. You can do so by going to System Preferences > Users & Groups. Once in a new user account, we'd like for you to see if the behavior continues. With that info, we can determine if the issue is user based, or system-wide.

We look forward to your findings.

Cheers.

Hi, I created a new user account as suggested (Standard user). I logged into that new account and left the system running and the external drives seem to have no problem staying connected with all files visible. I then switched back to my user account (Admin) and so far the external drives are functioning normally.

What is this magic?! I will keep monitoring and let you know if it becomes unstable again.

Thanks

Hey there,

Thanks for following up with us. We're committed to getting this issue resolved for you.

We'd like to continue isolating the issue down to a specific component or software. Our next step would be to have you, if possible, test these drives on a different computer, Mac or PC, to see if this behavior continues.

If you don't have the option to test out the drive on a different computer, we'd like to have you reach out to our support team using this link: Get Support

We look forward to continue to working with you.

Cheers.

The drive problem does not seem to happen on another computer.

More diagnostic information: my USB wireless mouse has become laggy/jerky especially in Safari. SMC and PRAM resets don't help, but disconnecting every other USB device seems to help (except keyboard). Also, trying an Apple Mouse bluetooth is just as frustrating.

Has 10.15.7 messed up the USB 3.0 Controller, or is this a hardware issue?

Thanks
