Monitor compatibility

I have just fired up my new iMac M1 Mini and tried to connect to an oldish LG HD monitor via hdmi then rgb connections - neither worked. I get rotating diagrams of what looks like a mouse and a cd drive?? Does this mean I need a newer model monitor, or am I simply overlooking something?

The monitor is working. The picture is asking you to turn on the mouse.
