OS X yosemite

hi my mac book air is now using OS X yosemite version 10.10.5. i cant seem to updte to newer version. hence i couldnt download some apps which require version 10.12 and above. how do i go about it?

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which MacBook Air model you have, download El Capitan, High Sierra, Catalina, or Big Sur.
