Switch to another Apple ID

I bought my wife an Apple iPhone XS Max and set it up with a new iCloud account. She didn't like it so I got her an Android phone.

My question is how do I switch the iPhone from her iCloud account to mine without having to erase everything?

When I try to edit "REACHABLE AT" in the phone's Settings/Apple ID/Name, Phone Numbers, Email

by adding my Apple ID in order to then erase hers I get this:

When I go to my iCloud for Windows on my PC click on Account details:

Then click on manage apple id:

I get this which shows that my Apple ID that I am trying to switch to on her iPhone is listed as one of the devices already associated with my Apple ID?

When changing to the new ID, there may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed.
