I have a new Mac mini M1 with 8GB Memory and 256GB SSD. I know that SSD is about 25 times slower than the Mac memory chip, but does it make sense to configure most of the internal SSD as the Memory swap drive and then just install an external 2T SSD? Trying to compensate for the lack of internal memory.
For one it is closer to 10X. Besides you can't configure "swap". The OS does what it
needs to and will use what it needs.
Generally, only keep apps and user data that you need access to everyday
or work in progress. Anything else can be off loaded to an external drive.
That is how I have been keeping all my systems set up over the years.
Keep the internal drive "lean and mean". I don't need to clog it up with
stuff I will only need once or twice a week, or month or years. Massive drives
take massive amounts of time to restore if there is a problem.

Yep, I do the same. All of my data files are on Dropbox so I can retrieve from computer, iPad, iPhone, or external computer. If I got a 2T SSD, I would sync entire Dropbox.
I would absolutely not trust any cloud storage as
a primary storage!
The cloud is wonderful, the cloud is good, until it isn't there!
And that last part will always happen at the worst possible
time.
