Solved. I was trying to update the Ipod software thru ITunes. I then disconnected the Ipod from my PC and downloaded directly to the Ipod on wifi. This worked fine. I recommend that If, when you connect your IPod to Itunes you get a message saying a new version of IOS is available, then don't try to handle it in Itunes, do it direct.
