Second Gen iPod not working

My 2nd generation iPod (bought 2009) had been working fine until plugged in to my Windows 10 PC to be synced. After trying to sync it on 29 Dec 2020 and it was saying 'synching', it became a dud and now does not work. It had been working fine before and playing music. Now all it does is shows the iTunes symbol and asking to be plugged in, but plugging in does not restore the iPod. The computer's iTunes acknowledges that it is there but it cannot be restored (it gives an error message that it cannot be restored). Is Apple software designed to destroy devices after a certain time?
