External display

I want to charge my MacBook while connected to a monitor / display. I bought the adaptor here:

I plugged the adaptor into my MacBook (2016 Retina) and then plugged in the USBC power source and the monitor via the HDMI port (connected to HDMI socket in the monitor).

The laptop isn't charging and the display says it has no HDMI connection.

Is the adaptor broken? Or am I doing something wrong?

I can connect the MacBook to the display with my old HDMI - USBc cable and the MacBook charges from the usual USBc power adaptor.

I would love some help if anyone is around - thanks.

It says 40W max, but presumably if it is a USBC adaptor with an HDMI slot, it should be able to cope with a screen?

Sorry, not quite sure what you mean here - have I bought the wrong adaptor then?

40W is barely sufficient for the power of the machine.

A USB-C Video adapter that has as at least 100W is better if you want both power pass through and video support.

Different adapters have different pass through wattage. It is best to get an adapter that actually advises you how many watts are available. SIIG and Belkin typically do.
