Our family photos sit in an album on my MacBook, my wife wants to access them from her iMac - she wants to look at them and clean them up as well - is there a way to do this? Thanks.

Hi - There are only two ways to do this. (and both invove sharing the whole library, not just an album)
One is to use iCloud photos (you would have to pay for enough storage) AND share the same apple ID - this is not reccomended. If you share the same apple ID you not only share photos, but everything else - eg phone messages etc.
The only other way to do this is to move the photos library onto an external disk, and plug that into whichever mac you want to work on. Obviously if you do it this way, only one Mac can have the library at a time. If you go down this route, The external storage must be formatted APFS or MacOS extended (journaled) (preferred for a mechanical drive), and not be (or have been) used for time machine. It must have the 'ignore ownership" checkbox ticked. It should not be on a memory stick, SD or similar. It stands to reason that if you want any sort of reasonable performance it should be a fast drive with a fast connection.
It must also not be a network drive (a direct connection is required - eg USB or Thunderbolt) . File sharing services such as iCloud Drive, Drop box, Onedrive etc are not compatible with Photos libraries.
