How to free up storage space on your Mac - Apple Support

From: How to upgrade to macOS Big Sur - Apple Support

"If upgrading from macOS Sierra or later, macOS Big Sur requires 35.5GB of available storage to

upgrade. If upgrading from an earlier release, macOS Big Sur requires

up to 44.5GB of available storage. To upgrade from OS X Mountain Lion,

What to do:

A. Manage Storage:

Remove items that are unnecessary (i.e. Movies, TV Shows, and Music). Typically, each Movie is 3 or 4GB, and each TV Show is 1GB an episode. If you have extremely large files (i.e. Virtual Machines), then rid of them too, backing them up to an external drive.

Important:

B. Back Up your Mac:

Prior to installing the upgrade your Mac, be certain you create a Time Machine backup of your Mac, so that you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong with the upgrade.
