Space bar to enlarge a photo not working

I used to be able to push the space bar to look at a photo larger - won't work any more. Just update to Catalina recently. Help appreciate

Does it apply to all photos or only some photos?

You should be able to view a selected photo enlarged by double clicking it or hitting the space bar. Does double clicking open the photo?


If it does not work at all, check, if Photos can access the original image files. Perhaps the original image files are missing or in an unsupported format, or Photos cannot access them.

  • Where is your Photos Library stored? Are the originals included in the library or referenced outside the library?
  • What is the file format of the originals?
  • Are you using iCloud Photos?
