Apple ID phishing email.

Today I received an email that my Apple ID has locked and if I don’t update my information in 24 hours, that my account will be permanently locked. When I tried to download an app, my Apple ID seemed to be working just fine and I was able to download the app. If my Apple ID was really locked could have I been able to download an app?Was this email sent by Apple?
