I'm preparing old macbook (mid 2013) for trade in for new Mac. My screen just flashes a folder icon with a question mark on it. I'm pretty sure I completed hard drive erasure and am now supposed to reinstall macOS.

you are not booting the machine into a bootable installer so its only searching for the erased drive with no system on it.
