iMac won't shut down completely or restart

I'm left with a black screen and a large cursor arrow. My mouse won't work. My computer feels really hot. My only recourse is to unplug the computer, wait a minute, replug, then push the start button on the back. This works but doesn't allow any iMac updates. Why can't I restart from the menu, or shut down from the menu?

  1. Do an NVRAM reset: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
  2. Do an SMC reset: How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

If the above fails, boot in Safe Mode and see if you iMac works as expected. If yes, reboot in normal mode.
