can't uninstall imovie or upgrade OS

Hello,

I'm unable to upgrade my operating system on my MacbookPro.

I currently have macOS High Sierra v. 10.13.6. When I go into App Store and select Updates, it says there is an Incompatible Update for iMovie. I went into my Launchpad and got iMovie to jiggle up a storm, then hit the magic X button to nuke it. It's no longer in my Launchpad, but when I try to do the Update again, it's telling me iMovie is still an Incompatible Update (after restarting my computer). I'm stuck. Is there something I'm not doing? I want to update my OS, so I can update other apps.

Help?

Christine

Do I have to update first to Mojave, then Catalina, then Big Sur? Or should I be able to jump straight to Big Sur from High Sierra?

You never clearly state what exact Mac is this— obviously not new enough to run the Big Sur as you indicate...

Older macOS can be had—including the macOS 10.14.6 / macOS 10.15.7

If you can run Mojave you can run Catalina, you do not need to stair step up.

I will add— With the release of macOS 10.15 Catalina, applications will have to be 64-bit. App developers will issue updated apps if they want their apps to work on these newer macOS upgrade
