I cannot screen shot on my mac

I am trying to take a screen shot of part of my screen, I'm still new to using my mac and a friend (and Google) told me command+shift+4 and select the portion I want to capture. This does not work it just makes a noise and does allow me to capture anything.

You want Shift-Command-5 for screen shots, see this

which also explains what Shift-Command-4 does as well.

P.S. If it makes a noise, it may be capturing the screen, is the noise like the sound of a camera shutter?

Look on your Desktop, or in the Pictures or Documents folders. If you don't see anything search in Spotlight for

Screen Shot

the file will have a name like that.
