iPad asking for Passcode after automatic update - passcode was never set

My son's iPad Mini 4, which we've had for years, just completed an automatic update and was prompting for a passcode which was never set on the device. I've searched articles and forums, and tried to provide the default passcodes suggested but nothing is working. It's extremely frustrating. I just had to work with Apple a couple weeks back after an update on my iPad Pro basically bricked my device. After speaking with Apple reps I learned that there is a new development team specifically developing the iPad software. I hope these issues are being escalated because I've been using Apple devices for years and have never had a single problem like this before. Now we've encountered two major bugs which have completely taken our devices out of commission. APPLE, please look into this.

If your iPad is disabled, or the passcode is forgotten or unknown, you have no alternative other than to follow this process:

If you’ve forgotten the passcode on your iPad, or your iPad is disabled – Apple Support

You’ll need access to either a PC (with iTunes installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of MacOS).

You may also need your AppleID and associated password. If these have also been forgotten, they can be recovered here:

https://iforgot.apple.com

To recover your credentials, you’ll need access to one of the following:

  • Your primary email address mailbox that corresponds with your AppleID
  • Any of the secondary/recovery email addresses that should be configured for your AppleID account
  • Any of the trusted telephone numbers (fixed line or Cellular/Mobile) that are associated with your AppleID

Unless you AppleID account has not been fully/correctly configured, or has been seriously neglected, recovery of the AppleID and password should not be difficult.
