I have a MacBook Air 2015. I would like to know if I can update the os, and if so how. I am new to Apple

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you'd like to update your MacBook to the most recent macOS version available. Looking at, macOS Big Sur is compatible with these computers, it does appear you can update your device to this release. Just follow the direction provided in article, How to upgrade to macOS Big Sur, to download and install the update.
