How do I transfer music from my iPod Nano (3rd generation) to my computer

I have just unearthed my lovely old Nano and it has some great music I uploaded from CDs etc and made some terrific playlists. This is not music I bought via iTunes. I don't want to lose the music or the playlists but it doesn't seem to be compatible with any import/export on Apple Music now. How do I get the music off my Nano and on to my MacBook so I can transfer the playlist to other hardware, please?

Hi London_user,

Thanks for reaching out to us here in Apple Support Communities! We understand that you'd like transfer content stored on your iPod nano to your computer, and we'd like to help with your questions.

The sync process between the MacBook and the iPod nano is a one-way process, with data moving from the Mac to the iPod. At this time, we don't have a supported way of moving content from an iPod back to a computer; it would need to be imported again from the CDs or other media. If you have a backup of the data previously stored on your computer, you may be able to move the old iTunes library to your Mac that way. We have more information about syncing content here:

Use the Finder to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer

Please keep in mind that if you attempt to sync the iPod nano with a new iTunes library, any content on the iPod will be erased.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please be sure to let us know!

Take care.
