transfer import video from canon zr850 to macbook air, have Thunderbolt to Fireware adapter and Firewire cable

Hi Folks,


I want to transfer miniDV tape video from my Canon ZR850 camcorder to my MacBook Air (Catalina 10.15.7) using iMovie (10.2.2).


I have it connected with an Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter (purchased new) and a FireWire cable (purchased new). Both the camera and the MacBook are running off household power.


iMovie does not recognize the camera. I have turned everything off and back on. I have plugged in and unplugged everything per suggestions I've read.


Per Canon "A driver is included with Mac operating systems later than Mac OS 9. The driver is installed automatically when you connect the camcorder to the computer. No additional driver is necessary or available."


The camera is not on the list of iMovie for macOS supported cameras.


Please help!

Importing Mini DV into iMovie 10 can be somewhat hit or miss. It works with some setups and sometimes not with others.


Although your cable setup seems fine, many camera non-recognition problems are caused by cable or adapter issues, or possibly a malfunctioning socket. You could have a bad cable or adapter, or a bad connection. Check your connections and make sure that they are all tight.


Try turning on the camera and actually getting it playing the video before doing the import function.


Try importing into QuickTimePlayer or to your desktop with the Image Capture on your Mac, and see if you can get recognition.
