Mac voice control dictation does not work in non-safari browsers

I never had this work, but finally decided to ask here.

I have MacBook Pro with Catalina. Have the voice control on. In safari, I am able to dictate text in text fields. But in other browsers like edge, chrome etc., the dictation does not work anywhere except in the URL box. Is this expected?

Note that I am using the voice control for dictation and not the dictate option in keyboard preferences [as it looks like I can only either have that or the voice control on]

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you are trying to use Voice Control to enter text within browsers and it is not working in third party browsers. Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for the response. Yes that is correct. And yes, I am selecting my text fields before trying to dictate to make sure they have the blinking cursor. The problem is, dictating text in a text field only works in safari. Other browsers I can dictate in the URL box only. Not in any of the text fields on a website. I've tried both Chrome and MS Edge.

I've gone into sound preferences and selected the internal microphone, as recommended, but I still wasn't able to use dictation. Then I saw something under System Preferences / Keyboard / Dictation: there is a thin label line under the microphone icon on the left, which is actually a drop-down menu. Selecting Internal Microphone from that view fixed the problem. I hope this info helps someone else.
